Greenwood has grown fast along I-65 and US 31, and a lot of that growth means replacing what was there first: tired houses near Old Town, detached garages that have outlived their use, and barns left standing on farmland that is turning into new neighborhoods.
Taking a building down in town is a different job than out in the country. Lots are tight, neighbors are close, and utilities and city requirements have to be handled before the first wall comes down. Alchemy Excavation is owned by a licensed Professional Engineer, so we plan the teardown, protect what is next door, and leave ground your builder can use.
Suburban teardowns come with their own challenges:
We plan around all four before scheduling the machine.
Remove an old house down to the footings so a new home can go on the same lot.
Detached garages, carports, sheds, and pool houses taken down and hauled away.
Old barns and outbuildings cleared from land being sold or developed on the edge of town.
Patios, slabs, sidewalks, and asphalt or concrete drives broken out and removed.
We line up the licensed inspection and state notice before the job is scheduled.
We work close to property lines without damaging the neighbor's yard, fence, or driveway.
Holes are filled in lifts and compacted, not just pushed in, so the ground won't settle later.
Inside Greenwood we follow city requirements; outside town we follow Johnson County's.
We can leave the site graded to the level your builder needs for the next foundation.
A well-planned demolition gives you:
The teardown sets up everything that comes after it.
We provide demolition and debris removal across Johnson County, including:
Residential, farm, and light commercial work.
Here’s what usually applies to a teardown in and around Greenwood.
Asbestos & IDEM – The Indiana Department of Environmental Management requires an inspection by an Indiana-licensed asbestos inspector and a demolition notification (State Form 44593) before most demolitions. Work can start no sooner than 10 working days after the notice is sent.
Inside Greenwood City Limits – Building and demolition permits go through the City of Greenwood Building Commissioner’s office. The city’s Stormwater Department also sets drainage and sediment control standards for disturbed ground.
Outside City Limits – Permits go through Johnson County.
Before We Dig – We call Indiana 811 at least two full working days before any excavation.
Yes. A teardown for rebuild is one of our most common jobs. We remove the old house, fill and compact the hole, and leave the lot ready for your builder.
An asbestos inspection, the IDEM demolition notice at least 10 working days ahead, utility shutoffs, and a permit if you are inside city limits. We help line these up so nothing is missed.
We plan the teardown so the building falls inward and away from neighbors, and we protect fences, trees, and driveways near the property line.
Once the paperwork and utility shutoffs are done, most single homes come down and get hauled off fairly quickly. The waiting period for the state notice is usually the longest part.
