Martinsville has older homes and garages near the historic courthouse square, and plenty of aging barns and outbuildings on farms across Morgan County. When one has to come down, the job is more than knocking it over.
Demolition in Indiana starts with an asbestos inspection and state notice, then utility disconnects and permits, and only then the teardown, haul-off, and site restoration. Alchemy Excavation is owned by a licensed Professional Engineer, so we also leave the site graded and ready for whatever you’re building next.
One crew from paperwork to clean, level ground.
A typical demolition goes in this order:
Skipping a step can stop the job or bring fines. We line it up before the machine shows up.
Full teardown of homes, detached garages, and additions, with debris hauled away and the basement or crawl space filled.
Old barns, sheds, grain bins, and pole buildings that are falling down or in the way of new plans.
Concrete foundations, slabs, sidewalks, and old driveways broken up and removed.
Storm debris, old building materials, and junk piles cleared, with the ground graded and seeded when we're done.
We line up the asbestos inspection, state notice, and permits before work starts, so the job doesn't get stopped halfway.
Trees, wells, septic systems, fences, and neighbors' property are protected while the building comes down.
Debris is loaded and hauled away, not buried on site, and the hole is backfilled with compacted soil.
Inside city limits we work with Martinsville Building Services; outside town we follow Morgan County requirements.

Demolition has more rules than most site work. Here’s what usually applies.
Asbestos & IDEM – The Indiana Department of Environmental Management requires an inspection by an Indiana-licensed asbestos inspector and a demolition notification (State Form 44593) before most demolitions. Work can start no sooner than 10 working days after the notice is sent.
Inside Martinsville City Limits – Martinsville Building Services issues demolition permits (59 S Jefferson St, 765-349-4923).
Outside City Limits – Permits go through Morgan County.
Before We Dig – We call Indiana 811 at least two full working days before any excavation.
In most cases, yes. IDEM requires an inspection by an Indiana-licensed asbestos inspector before demolition, and any asbestos found has to be handled before the building comes down. We’ll confirm what applies to your building.
The IDEM notification has to be sent at least 10 working days before demolition starts, plus time for the inspection and any city permit. Plan on a few weeks from first call to teardown.
Yes. We can break up and remove foundations, basement walls, slabs, sidewalks, and old driveways, then backfill and compact the area.
It depends on the size and type of building, what it’s made of, whether the foundation comes out, and how far debris has to be hauled. We give a clear written price after a free site visit.
