In Mitchell and throughout Indiana, unmanaged water flow is one of the most common causes of driveway failure and property erosion. Clay-heavy soils and rolling terrain in southern Indiana can quickly overwhelm undersized culverts or poorly graded drainage systems.
Alchemy Excavation provides engineering-led culvert installation and drainage improvement services designed to manage runoff, stabilize soil, and protect long-term property performance. Proper drainage design ensures water flows where it should and not across your driveway or toward your foundation.
Most long-term property damage begins with uncontrolled water.
Mitchell properties frequently experience:
Clay soils retain moisture and increase surface runoff during storms. Without properly sized culverts and correct slope, water can undermine driveway entrances and damage surrounding soil structure.
Effective drainage improvements begin with evaluating how water enters, moves across, and exits your property.
Culvert diameter, invert elevation, and slope are selected to handle expected flow and reduce washout risk—so water moves through the crossing cleanly instead of backing up.
We look at ditch function, upstream/downstream restrictions, driveway elevations, and runoff paths to correct the reason flooding and erosion keep returning.
Proper bedding, compaction, erosion control measures, and stabilized inlets/outlets help prevent settlement, pipe deformation, and blowouts.
Outside city limits, driveway culverts on county roads go through the Lawrence County Highway Department, which recommends the pipe size. Inside Mitchell city limits, check with the City. State highways like SR 37 and SR 60 need an INDOT permit.
We work on driveway culverts, road crossings, ditches, stormwater improvements, and full-scale drainage systems for residential and rural properties.
A culvert rarely fails “by itself.” Most failures start with water patterns that were never truly controlled. That’s why we often pair culvert work with complementary drainage improvements, such as:
This is how you get a long-tail fix—not a temporary patch.
Mitchell sits in the heart of Lawrence County’s karst country, the same limestone landscape that formed the caves and sinkholes at nearby Spring Mill State Park. Water can disappear into the ground in one spot and pop back up in another, and a ditch or culvert outlet that dumps runoff toward a sinkhole can make the problem worse. Rolling farm ground and steep drive approaches off county roads add fast runoff in heavy rain. Sizing the pipe and protecting the outlet both matter here.

Eliminate soggy yards, pooling, and recurring drainage issues.

Correct slopes, reshape ditches, and restore proper surface water flow.

Engineered drainage systems, including basins, swales, and flow correction.
It depends on the road. On Lawrence County roads outside Bedford, Mitchell, and Oolitic, call the Lawrence County Highway Department at (812) 275-2644. A district foreman will look at the driveway and recommend the pipe size. Inside Mitchell city limits, check with the City of Mitchell. Driveways off a state highway such as SR 37 or SR 60 need an INDOT right-of-way permit. If the culvert affects a regulated drain, the Lawrence County Surveyor gets involved.
There’s no safe one-size answer. Culvert sizing depends on contributing drainage area, ditch geometry, slope, and downstream restrictions. Oversimplifying culvert size is one of the fastest ways to repeat a washout.
Common causes include a culvert set too high/low, wrong slope, undersized diameter, blocked ditch line, or no inlet/outlet protection. We assess the whole flow path so water can move continuously.
Sometimes. If the pipe is structurally sound, we may improve ditch grading, reset elevations, add stabilization, or correct the outlet condition. If the pipe is crushed/collapsing, replacement is typically the right move.
